As the president of a 100% natural sunscreen distribution company, I have had hundreds of phone conversations with people who want a true chemical free alternative to the traditional sunscreen they see on store shelves.
The people who contact us about our MelanSol® 100% Natural Sunscreen fall into four distinct categories: those who have experienced skin cancer and suspect their chemical sunscreen had something to do with it; those who have skin reactions to the active ingredients and other chemicals traditional sunscreens contain; those who understand that chemicals they apply to their skin can end up in their body; and those who don’t trust traditional sunscreen because they aren’t sure that the contents are safe. Peter Zahner, the man who invented MelanSol® 100% Natural Sunscreen, did so because he was suffering from both basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma skin cancer on his face. When the chemical sunscreen he was urged to use by his dermatologist did not prevent further occurrences, he researched the actual cause of these two forms of skin cancer and found that both were caused by skin cells that mutated because of repeated free radical damage over time. Free radicals form on the skin when it’s exposed to UV radiation and airborne environmental pollution. What’s not widely publicized is that chemical active ingredients in traditional sunscreens also cause the formation of free radicals on skin. Traditional sunscreens rely on chemical active ingredients that use heat energy to absorb the sun’s radiation. This process of heat energy begins to activate the moment you apply them to your skin. You must wait 20 to 30 minutes before going into sunlight because it takes that long for the energy process to reach full absorption capacity. These sun absorbing ingredients contribute to basal and squamous cell skin cancer when the UV radiation the have absorbed is release as low level radiation when their ability to absorb begins to decline. This release of low level energy causes the formation of free radicals that damage skin cells, just like those formed when skin is exposure to sunlight. (See attached explanation for more detail) Very few of the people I speak with actually understand that there is a connection between sunscreen chemical active ingredients and the two fastest growing non-lethal forms of skin cancer. They only have suspicions. After informing them as to how the chemical process of absorption works, they take control of their skin care by purchasing sunscreen that doesn’t cause the formation of free radicals because it uses physical UV reflectors (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) to safely reflect UV radiation away from skin. Of course, the balance of the ingredients must also be completely natural. The biggest misconception with sunscreen buyers is that using sunscreen will help them avoiding a more deadly form of skin cancer called melanoma. We never claim that MelanSol® will help prevent this form of skin cancer because there is no definitive evidence that free radicals cause melanoma or that sunscreen can prevent its formation. UVA radiation is said to play an important part in the development of melanoma, which is why we test and label all of our sunscreen for its ability to protect from both UVA and UVB radiation. Because UVA radiation is at 100% intensity from dawn until dusk, reaches deeper into the skin, can reach through windows, and can cause a slow forming sunburn, it’s a good idea to use a sunscreen that has been tested and labeled for low, medium, or high UVA protection. The word broad-spectrum is a marketing term the industry came up with to convey that their sunscreens active ingredients have the UVA, UVB & UVC light spectrum covered. Don’t believe it! They can test and label their sunscreens for UVA protection (as several smaller manufacturers do), only they can say why they don’t, other than it is not currently required by the FDA. At MelanSol® 100% Natural Skin Care, our mantra is a simple one: Use strong natural antioxidants every day to counter casual free radical damage. This one habit will go a long way in helping your skin resist the aging process. Active ingredients allow you to remain in the sun for longer periods by filtering a high percentage of sunlight. This filtering process alone has nothing to do with protecting your skin from free radical damage. At the heart of every MelanSol® sunscreen formula is a synergistic combination of three natural fruit and botanical antioxidants because we firmly believe a sunscreen is not really a sunscreen if doesn’t help prevent free radical damage.
